Born in Clarksburg, Va., probably Jan. 2l, 1824, took part in the American Revolution on the patriot side. Thomas Jonathan was made a constable of Lewis county when only eighteen years old. In 1842 he was appointed a cadet to the U.S. Military academy, and passed the examination by favor, which made his freshman year at West Point especially trying to a Virginia boy with but little school training, whom had lived in the woods and was unaccustomed to restraint.
